Upper Elementary (4th-6th Grade) and Middle School (6th-8th Grade) teams are forming now!
4th Grade Through 6th Grade
Are you ready to think like an engineer, code like a programmer, and compete like a champion? Our First LEGO League (FLL) Challenge program invites students to join a team of 6–8 peers for a hands-on STEM adventure that runs from the first day of school through December. Working together, your team will design, build, and program LEGO-based robots to tackle exciting, real-world challenges — developing critical thinking, collaboration, and creative problem-solving skills along the way. Whether you're a seasoned builder or picking up your first LEGO brick, FLL is your opportunity to discover a passion for science, technology, engineering, and math in the most fun way possible. Don't just learn about the future — build it.
7th Grade Through 8th Grade
To expand the opportunities for a wider array of students, we are considering (but not yet committed to) offering TWO programs this year:
1) The traditional, competitive Fall season. Teams are formed in early September and meet regularly 3 days/week. Students will be creating custom designs using CAD, machining and 3D printing parts, programming using Java, and documenting their season in an Engineering Portfolio. The season is fast-paced with the first tournament 8-10 weeks after kick off, a second tournament a few weeks later, and the season culminates at the Michigan State Championship in December. Historically, our Fall teams have a range of styles -- from teams that operate a bit relaxed, to teams that are exceptionally driven -- but all have some competitive spirit.
2) A non-competitive, recreational Spring season. The team would form in February, and meet 2 days/week for a total of 8-10 weeks. We envision the team would start with an off-the-shelf kit robot and apply some level of creative problem solving to generate a solution to solve the season's game challenge. The team would showcase their work at a single Spring tournament, held in May. Historically, we have not fielded teams in the Spring, but this could be a good option for students that are looking for a STEM-based extracurricular activity but not particularly interested in a competitive team.
