Hartland Robotics starts early! Our preschool program introduces young learners to the exciting world of STEM through FIRST LEGO League Discover, a playful and hands-on experience designed specifically for children aged 4–5. Using storytelling, simple machines, and creative building, students begin their journey into problem-solving, teamwork, and innovation.
Every season begins with an engaging story that introduces a big idea—like transportation, energy, or communities. Through age-appropriate guided activities, children explore how the world works and how they can make it better. They ask questions, make observations, and learn by doing.
Each session includes building a model using LEGO® DUPLO® bricks. Students learn the basics of engineering and design as they create structures, vehicles, and scenes inspired by the challenge theme. These builds are collaborative and open-ended, encouraging imagination and teamwork.
After building the group model, each child creates a unique version of it—adding their own ideas and flair. This helps develop fine motor skills, confidence, and creativity. Children take pride in their work and learn that there’s no single "right" way to solve a problem.
At the end of the season, families and friends are invited to a fun and informal Celebrate event, where students explain their team model and individual builds. They talk about what they learned and proudly show off their ideas, practicing early communication and presentation skills.
Working in small teams, children begin to develop essential social and emotional skills like taking turns, sharing materials, and listening to others’ ideas. Coaches help guide interactions and encourage each child to contribute, laying the foundation for effective teamwork.
Most of all, students discover that learning is fun! They begin to see themselves as builders, problem-solvers, and teammates. The program encourages curiosity, confidence, and a positive attitude toward trying new things—skills that will serve them for a lifetime.
