In small group settings, students are given the opportunity to develop important teamwork skills by learning how to collaborate effectively with others. One of the very first challenges each team encounters is coming together to make a collective decision—choosing an official team name! This initial task may seem simple, but it plays a key role in helping students start to bond, express creativity, and establish a sense of identity within their team.
Teams are mentored by participants from our middle and high school robotics programs. This mentorship not only enhances those programs, but also helps our younger participants to see where a future in robotics will lead them, while building meaningful connections across age groups.
During their meetings, teams work together to complete a variety of LEGO mini builds designed to help them solve problems creatively and collaboratively. As they construct their models, students begin to explore and understand the basics of simple machines, such as levers, pulleys, wheels and axles, and gears, gaining practical knowledge through fun, engaging challenges.
Participants are introduced to basic programming concepts through hands-on activities using LEGO Education tools, creating simple sequences and commands to make their models move and react. This foundational programming experience builds logical thinking skills and computational reasoning in a fun, age-appropriate way that prepares children for more advanced coding as they grow.
At the end of the season, all teams come together to proudly share the projects they’ve been working on. This special event, called a Festival, is a fun and exciting opportunity for teams to present their ideas, creations, and what they’ve learned throughout the season. The Festival is a joyful way to wrap up the season and recognize everyone’s achievements!
The FIRST Robotics World Festival is an annual celebration where Explore teams can showcase their research projects and LEGO models alongside participants from all FIRST programs. This exciting event helps younger participants to build confidence, develop presentation skills, and experience the incredible atmosphere of the global FIRST community.
